True story: PC game Civilization was inspired by Maxis’s SimCity and Bullfrog’s Populous, both games that let you muck with aspects of civilizations at different levels.
Canadian history buff Sid Meier had played and admired both, but wanted something grander that intermingled warfare, exploration, diplomacy, city-building and elements of political philosophy.
Civilization in 1991 was his answer, a turn-based strategy epic with a board game feel that asked players to lead a primitive tribe from the stone age to a flourishing civilization on the verge of traveling to distant star system Alpha Centauri.
