The premise of The Sims sounded so stupid. Then people played it. Then it won Game of the Year. Then it became the best-selling PC game of all time. Apparently there’s a Sims movie in development, which actually does sound pretty stupid. But the game itself is pretty incredible.
You create a version of yourself, build yourself a house, get yourself a job, buy yourself some furniture, make yourself some friends, meet yourself a spouse, have yourself some kids and live happily ever after. It’s like real life, but in a computer game, and you have the option of acting like a self-righteous a-hole without any of the real-life consequences.
You can literally spend hours — days! weeks! months! — living a relatively routine lifestyle as a computer game character. To this day, I’m still not entirely sure how the series got so successful, but it sure is hard to quit once you’ve started. This is the modern-day version of playing house.
