The iPhone faces stronger smartphone competition than ever, but when it comes to overall refinement, it still has no peer — and the iPhone 5 is the company’s most refined model to date. Apple finally gave in to the big-screen craze, but just a little: It made the display taller but not wider, so the phone doesn’t overwhelm your hand. It added LTE 4G wireless capability without killing the battery life. It improved the camera — which was already the best in the business — with features such as a protective sapphire cover. And it figured out how to cram all the improvements into a handset that’s noticeably thinner, lighter and more beautifully crafted than the iPhone 4S.
