I wrote about Yamaha’s AvantGrand N-series last year — a hybrid piano line sporting a full concert grand piano action in an upright frame, the strings replaced by sensors that trigger ultra-realistic piano samples. The only gotcha: The pianos can easily run upwards of $10,000. Yamaha’s NU1, just released, is the same idea, but with a less expensive upright action instead. It’s still pricey at $5,499 MSRP, but most places should sell it for considerably less if you’re willing to haggle.
