There’s no accounting for taste when it comes to sample libraries, but Synthogy Ivory is virtually uncontested when it comes to acoustic piano fidelity. For roughly $300, you get over 77 GB of acoustic grand pianos — including a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial Grand, Steinway D Concert Grand and Yamaha C7 Grand — support for half-pedaling, sympathetic string resonance and an elegant front-end that’ll let you tweak the physical modeling any way you like. The only caveat: You need a separate iLok USB key (a copy protection measure) and a free USB slot to run the software, which adds $50 to the purchase price.
