The Nest learning thermostat looks like the sort of gadget that Apple might design — which makes perfect sense, since it comes from a startup co-founded by Tony Fadell, the guy who came up with the iPod in the first place. The newest version of the $249 gizmo has a round stainless-style case and a color touchscreen; it uses a motion detector to save energy when you’re not at home, and encourages you to conserve even further by setting the temperature just a little cooler or warmer than usual. Mobile apps and a web site let you monitor your usage and control the Nest from anywhere you’ve got an Internet connection.
